There’s a good chance you’ve heard the acronym thrown around in Amazon circles β AMC this, AMC that β and nodded along politely while quietly wondering what on earth everyone’s talking about.
You’re not alone. Amazon Marketing Cloud is one of those tools that sounds incredibly technical, gets discussed mostly by data teams, and as a result, a lot of brand owners and marketing leads either tune out or assume it’s not for them.
It is for them. And it’s genuinely brilliant! Let’s break it down.
π§ So, What Actually Is Amazon AMC?
Amazon Marketing Cloud (AMC) is Amazon’s privacy-safe data clean room. In plain English: it’s a secure, cloud-based environment where you can analyse your Amazon advertising data in ways that simply aren’t possible through the standard campaign dashboards.
It works by combining data from multiple sources β Sponsored Ads, Amazon DSP, Amazon retail signals, and even your own first-party data β and letting you run custom queries across all of it.
The result? A genuinely joined-up view of how your customers are behaving, how your advertising is performing, and what’s actually driving your sales.
π Why the Standard Dashboards Aren’t Enough
Here’s the problem with relying solely on Amazon’s default reporting tools.
Each campaign type lives in its own silo.
Sponsored Products tells you one story. Sponsored Brands tells you another. DSP tells you something else entirely. And none of them talk to each other.
So when a customer sees your DSP ad on a Monday, your Sponsored Brand on Wednesday, and then converts on Friday β the standard view gives each touchpoint partial credit, or misses the journey entirely.
AMC changes that completely. It lets you:
β¨ Analyse the full path to purchase across multiple ad types
β¨ See how long customers take to convert after first exposure
β¨ Understand which combination of touchpoints drives the highest return
β¨ Identify audience overlap between your DSP and Sponsored Ads campaigns
β¨ Build custom attribution models that reflect your actual business goals
That last one is worth pausing on. Amazon’s default attribution model is last-click. AMC lets you move beyond that and understand the real contribution of each part of your funnel.
π What Can You Actually Do With It?
AMC is SQL-based, which means it requires some technical know-how to query β but the insights it surfaces are relevant to every brand, regardless of size or category.
Some of the most powerful use cases include:
Multi-touch attribution
Instead of giving all the credit to the final click, you can map out every touchpoint in a customer’s journey and understand what’s genuinely influencing purchase decisions.
New-to-brand analysis
AMC can tell you what percentage of your converters are genuinely new customers versus returning ones β and which ad types are most effective at acquiring each.
Frequency and reach optimisation
You can identify whether you’re overexposing the same audience across multiple campaign types, and adjust accordingly. This is particularly valuable for brands running both DSP and Sponsored Ads simultaneously.
Audience suppression and remarketing
Build custom audience segments based on real behavioural signals β and then activate those audiences within your DSP campaigns. Suppress recent purchasers, target lapsed customers, or identify high-value shoppers who haven’t converted yet.
Time-to-conversion insights
How long does it actually take someone to buy after first seeing your ad? For some categories, it’s minutes. For others, it’s weeks. AMC tells you exactly β which should directly inform your campaign windows and retargeting strategies.
π― Why This Matters Strategically (Not Just Technically)
This is where we want to be direct with you.
AMC is powerful. But access to data doesn’t automatically translate into better decisions. We’ve seen brands get access to AMC, run a few queries, produce a dashboard full of fascinating numbers β and then carry on doing exactly what they were doing before.
The insight is only as valuable as the action it drives.
The real opportunity with AMC is to shift from reactive advertising management β checking what happened last week and tweaking bids β to proactive strategy built on a genuine understanding of your customer journey.
β¨ Which audience segments are worth investing in, and which are burning budget?
β¨ Where are the gaps in your funnel that paid advertising could fill?
β¨ What does your customer’s path to purchase actually look like β and is your campaign structure aligned to it?
These are strategic questions. AMC gives you the data to answer them properly.
π‘ Is AMC Right for Every Brand?
Broadly yes, but with caveats.
AMC delivers the most value when you’re running advertising at meaningful scale, ideally across more than one campaign type. If you’re exclusively running Sponsored Products on a modest budget, the additional layer of analysis may not yet justify the investment.
But if you’re running DSP alongside Sponsored Ads, managing a significant advertising budget, or trying to understand a complex customer journey β AMC isn’t optional. It’s essential.
The brands who will win on Amazon over the next few years won’t just be the ones with the biggest budgets. They’ll be the ones who understand their data better than their competitors do.
