Navigating the New Delivery-Window Requirement for Fulfilment by Amazon (FBA) Shipments

Amazon is in the business of selling and shipping items easily, efficiently and quickly.

So, it stands to reason that they want to do everything in their power to enable that for buyers and sellers alike.

This is the premise of their recently announced delivery window process “Send to Amazon”, which aims to enable a quicker turnaround for getting stocks in faster.

Let’s dive in.

What is the Send to Amazon requirement?

ICYMI, on February 9th, 2024, Amazon announced a new requirement called the Send to Amazon process. It requires sellers to provide a ‘delivery window’ – or a range of dates – by which their stock is expected to arrive at the Amazon fulfilment centres.

When you create a shipment, you will need to create a “delivery window” for when your shipments should arrive in the fulfilment centre. The date range is:

  • 7 days for domestic shipping (e.g. May 1-7)
  • 14 days for cross-border shipping (e.g. May 1-14)

If something crops up and your shipment will be delayed, you can update the “Tracking details” on the Send to Amazon step. However, you can only do this before the shipment start date, if your order is delayed in transit you cannot update that tab.

This aims to improve the efficiency of receiving and processing shipments, enabling better inventory management.


Why is this a crucial requirement?

As we said above, Amazon wants to ensure the seamless flow of products to its customers, and this Send to Amazon process helps them to do just that as let’s face it, so many issues can crop up with transportation! The process:

  • Helps you get your products in stock sooner
  • Ensure effective inventory stock management
  • It allows you to create better supply chain decisions
  • Avoids delays as Amazon is aware of the date of shipments
    Optimises operational efficiency, costs, time and labour.

Remember, if you are shipping domestically then it’s a 7-day range, for cross-border shipping it’s a 14-day range!


Who does this apply to?

Those who use Amazon-partnered carriers or Amazon Global Logistics are exempt – this new process applies to shipments from non-partnered carriers.

If you use a non-partnered carrier for small-parcel or less-than-truckload shipments, you must provide a delivery window on Send to Amazon.


What is the difference between “ship date” and “delivery window”?

Great question as you may get confused between these two terms! The ship date is the date you send the shipment to the fulfilment centre, the delivery window is the date range when the shipment is expected to arrive.


Why is the tracking ID not enough?

Amazon recently held an “Ask Amazon” session where sellers could ask anything about this topic and one seller asked, “We don’t want to send a consignment on a Monday to be told it will be expected during the next 5 days, we know when it’s coming, that’s the whole point of the tracking number isn’t it?”

Here’s Amazon’s reply which we thought was useful for this article:

“Whilst the tracking IDs are a good way to indicate the arrival of the package, the current integration from carrier works only when you use Partnered Carrier Program (PCP). Given the variability in transportation lead times, we are asking for a date range on all non-PCP shipments as this provides Amazon with an expected arrival for the shipment so Amazon can better manage incoming shipments.”
