Are you sitting there wondering how Amazon prevent counterfeiting, fraud and other forms of abuse? Well, you don’t need to be in the dark any longer, Amazon has recently released their Brand Protection report which details everything you need to know!

The report outlines their commitment to the authenticity of goods sold in their store and to hold bad actors accountable to protect your business and help you grow.

Quick note: Before we dive in – what are bad actors? Bad actors make copyright infringement claims against Amazon’s selling partners in an attempt to get their products removed from the Amazon store.

In March 2023, Amazon filed lawsuits against multiple bad actors for the first time via their Counterfeit Crimes Unit (CCU)!

What is Amazon doing to combat counterfeiting, fraud and other forms of abuse?

In 2023, they invested more than $1.2 billion and employed more than 15,000 people—including machine learning scientists, software developers, and expert investigators—dedicated to protecting customers, brands, sellers, and the platform from counterfeit, fraud, and other forms of abuse.

The report outlines the progress they’ve made, including the following highlights:

  • In 2023, 7 million counterfeit products were identified, seized, and appropriately disposed of worldwide, preventing them from harming customers or being resold elsewhere in the retail supply chain.
  • Since its launch in 2020, Amazon’s Counterfeit Crimes Unit has pursued more than 21,000 bad actors through litigation and criminal referrals to law enforcement.
  • Proactive controls blocked more than 99% of suspected infringing listings before a brand ever had to find and report them.
  • Since 2020, while the number of products available for sale on Amazon has continued to grow, they have seen a more than 30% decrease in the total valid notices of infringement submitted by brands. This has been helped by tools such as Amazon Brand Registry.
